Hello

I am planning to repair a lot of holes and old patches in the wall of our house. It is yellow brick. The house is from 1961.

My plan is to remove all the loose old mortar and the ugly patches the previous owners used. Then fill in with something like Finja Murbruk B.

What do you suggest?

Which mortar should I use so that it resembles the old original as much as possible?

  • A 1961 house with yellow brick walls and a dark wooden garage door, discussing repairing old mortar and brickwork.
  • Damaged and patched yellow brick wall with loose mortar under a dark wooden panel, showing wear on a 1961 house.
  • Exterior wall with yellow bricks showing old mortar repairs near a window, highlighting areas needing restoration to match original 1961 construction.
  • Brick wall with visible damage and old mortar, yellow bricks from a house built in 1961. Wall repairs are discussed, focusing on suitable mortar substitutes.

It is very difficult to match old mortar with bagged products - you basically have to be lucky. Most likely, your mortar was mixed locally on-site in 1961 from sand and cement. That is, the aggregate came from the nearest gravel pit, often every small community had one.

Purchase several different mortars and test if any have similar aggregate and color (the cement can be anything from almost white to ash gray.) Or you can find the sand that was used and mix the mortar yourself with the right-colored cement.

Then there is the tough way, re-point the entire facade. Then everything looks the same.

Thank you for all the answers.

Is primer necessary?

I plan to grind off the old one with a drill.

You should soak the wall properly first (pressure washer) and then apply mortar, right?
