I am going to lay new fireproof bricks in my fireplace.
I have removed the ones that were there, and now it looks like the pictures.
Do I need to fill the voids, or can I ignore them and proceed as it looks now?
What else should I consider?
An open fireplace with missing firebricks, surrounding tools, and a plant on the mantel. Question about filling cavities before replacing bricks. Fireplace with removed firebricks, showing exposed cavity with rough, uneven surface and visible gaps, ready for new firebrick installation. Interior close-up of a fireplace with removed firebricks, showing gaps and uneven surfaces, illustrating areas for potential renovation or repair.

About to start the same project. Purchased fire-resistant stone and mortar.
Will fill the cavities.

Will you fill them with just mortar?
And if so, should it be applied in layers or is it acceptable to fill a 3x3cm gap all at once?
Or on second thought, should I probably fill everything and insert small stones where I can?
I have ordered 25 kg of pre-mixed "mortar" (https://www.schamotte-shop.de/icf-spezialmoertel-25kg-eimer-gebrauchsfertig-ohne-anruehren-2.html) and I don't think it will be enough if I need to fill up as well.
There will be chamotte stones 4cm at the bottom and 3cm on the sides.
Do I need refractory mortar for filling behind the stones?

Looking for answers to pretty much the same questions.
I was thinking of "grouting" the red brick so I get an even surface to work from.

Read somewhere that you should leave some expansion space between refractory and red brick.
I find it a bit difficult to find information about stove masonry in general.

I have decided not to fill behind beforehand.
I will try to apply generously on the stones before I place them and adjust.
This will probably create some expansion space.
