I am going to renovate one of the rooms in the basement (which is furnished, insulated, and moisture-free living space), primarily I want to get rid of the dreadful fiberglass wallpaper/weave wallpaper that is on the walls. There is also a similar weave wallpaper on the ceiling, but with a different pattern. Here are pictures of the room:
Okay, so now I have considered a couple of options.
The first option is also the simplest and most expensive, namely to buy paneling. The cost of the renovation would then be about 25,000 SEK I have calculated. That made me rule out this option when I instead got a tip about raw plank. Painting raw plank myself and installing it on both walls and ceiling would cost about 15,000 SEK, which is more suitable. In these figures, I have accounted for not only timber but also paint, studs, brads, and so on.
Then I read a lot about either removing the weave wallpaper or painting it. I'm not quite sure why I would paint it—the texture will remain and shine through anyway...? Yet, there are some tips here and there about just painting. But wouldn’t it have to be combined with plastering, which is mentioned here: http://www.byggahus.se/forum/farg-mala-tapetsera/124279-vad-ar-detta-sorts-vaggbekladnad-tapet.html
Or is there a type of paint that can "seal" the texture that I am unaware of? I am also reading about "renovation wallpaper" that can do the same job—which would be the cheapest provided I would hire a painter for the plastering?
What I am also reading about is removing the weave wallpaper. But it doesn’t seem like a good option—I don’t know what's underneath (the house was built in 1934). Feel free to shout out if you think I should consider removing the weave wallpaper (and what advantage would that give?)
So, what do I really need help with? Well, in addition to general comments being welcome to see if I'm thinking correctly, my first question is:
How do you think the result would look aesthetically, with raw planks compared to plastering and painting/wallpapering? A factor that plays a role here is that the ceiling is low. So regardless of whether it's wallpaper or raw planks, should they perhaps be placed to create vertical lines? That should make it feel higher, right?
Question number two is whether you have comments on choosing plastering on the wallpaper versus installing renovation wallpaper (e.g., Easy Cover or similar). Is it cheaper or better to hire a painter for full-scale plastering vs. buying all the lengths required? We're talking about about 40 m² of floor/ceiling area and about 60 m² of wall area.
Then I also wonder if anyone has seen a similar renovation project somewhere to get inspiration from. That is, a room that is small but has a pillar in the middle. The conditions seem quite poor, so it would be interesting to see if something good can be done if you go "all-in"
