I was thinking of quickly replacing the tiles on the old wood stove this Friday since the old ones were ugly and cracked. It turns out that the person who did this before cut so many corners that much of what's underneath was loose and also fell off.

What should I do here?

My idea is to remove everything loose. Cast? Up to an even level and then put tiles.

What type of mortar should I use?

  • Old stove with black iron top and surrounding damaged brown tiles removed, exposing rough brick beneath.
  • Close-up of a cracked and damaged plastered surface above a wood stove, revealing underlying loose and uneven brickwork.
  • Old cracked bricks and broken mortar around a wood stove, with loose pieces missing, needing repair and leveling before tiling.
Update:

I used regular mur&putsbruk C. Filled the holes and plastered a smooth surface that I can then tile on. We'll see how it turns out.
