Hello

I am considering renovating a cast stairway, but primarily an adjoining cast veranda on a house from the 1920s.

Cracks have developed on/in parts of the vertical surfaces, and I have now chipped away some loose material to get a better view of the extent.

I'm pondering what material and associated technique to use to repair these cracks/voids. Achieving a tight-fitting form to prevent it from running out and down or expanding (difficult to ensure the form fits snugly against the surrounding material) seems challenging to accomplish.

If it had been more on the horizontal surfaces, I would have used construction concrete, but here I hope that repair mortar is a more suitable alternative, although I'm a bit unsure how to get enough material deeper into the cracks (but perhaps that's not crucial?).

Attached is an example of what it looks like.

  • Close-up of cracked concrete on a 1920s house veranda, showing damage on vertical surfaces, with some loose material removed for repair assessment.
  • Cracked concrete surface with exposed material on a vertical structure, showing damage likely from weathering, in need of repair on a 1920s house veranda.
