You glue and screw together two 45x145 pieces so that they form a new 90x145 beam. The primary task of the screws is to hold everything together while the glue dries. The screws are preferably placed in a zig-zag pattern. You can see that they are set close enough when the glue is squeezed out of the joints.

Ahhh :) Now I understand, I read "split it in half" as to saw along the middle of the entire plank… Well, that sounds even a bit easier. Does it matter which way the heartwood side of the plank faces? Should it form a () at the ends, or )(, or perhaps ( (?

It doesn't make a significant difference if it's a () or )(. However, avoid (( or ))!
