Remove trellis from staircase? How the HE*L

Hello everyone

I am going to remove the trellis from my classic pine staircase. It has no supporting structure. Now to my problem... how the heck is the trellis attached to the staircase itself? I can't find any screws from the trellis into the staircase. Has anyone experienced anything similar? :x

Saw one off and gently wiggle it, then you can feel where it is attached.

Sawed off a little and moved it, and then this appeared... There underneath must be a screw, right? Is it some kind of wooden plug to probably hide the screw?

Looks almost like a plug that you press into door frames to cover the holes

Remove with a knife/ screwdriver?
