Remove some from a load-bearing beam
In my laundry room/bathroom in the basement, I have exposed the ceiling beams and am going to make a shower. In the shower, I don't want the beam since it will get quite damp and the ceiling height is only about 210 cm. Can you saw off about one meter approximately 6 cm in height from the beam without risking anything collapsing? The beams are 22.5 cm high and spaced about 40 cm apart.
You want to reduce the beam's height by 26% ...
My gut feeling tells me that it won't work without reinforcement somewhere.
If it does, then someone has significantly over-dimensioned it before...
Reducing the height by 26% will decrease the load-bearing capacity much more.
But without knowing the length of the beams, what load is on them, and such, no one can calculate if it will hold.
(I can't calculate this either
, but maybe someone else can)

Maybe the best option would be to completely remove the beam, but to know if it’s possible and how to do it without reducing the load-bearing capacity, it might be advisable to have someone knowledgeable come and take a look on-site. It’s difficult to say anything without knowing all the conditions. However, in all likelihood, you can probably remove the entire beam where it’s in the way, if done correctly.
