Remove broken screw in wood

I would have started with a smaller drill bit first to create a small pilot hole.
If that didn't work, I would have clamped a piece of wood with a hole against the screw as a guide to prevent it from wobbling away.
A third option, as someone else mentioned, is to make a new hole in the bracket.
