Remediate asbestos-insulated heating pipes?
I have seen some threads in various places but need more help from those with experience. As I understand both from the forum and the environmental and health protection in my home municipality, it is completely legal to remove asbestos as long as you do it privately in your own home. I imagine that the specialized companies will cost me a fortune to come and do the job.
My questions that I need answers/tips on are the following:
- Protective equipment, what did you use? What type of mask and filter should one have?
- Do you remove the entire pipe including all other insulation, or do you need to separate the insulation and pipe for the tip to accept it as hazardous waste?
- Our entire basement is going to be renovated and repainted. Do you need to use ventilation fans with purification, etc.? I was thinking of wetting down the stuff during disassembly so the spread should be minimal.
Grateful for all tips.

If I were in your shoes, I would put on a good face mask with the right filter and then take down the pipes whole. Don't mess with the insulation in the house. It's probably old iron pipes that you want to replace anyway.
I don't think anyone will protest if you throw the pipes, including insulation, in the metal scrap container, but if you want to separate it, do it outside, preferably when it's a bit windy.

Carefully remove the asbestos and tie it in double bags/sacks and deliver it to the recycling center; they usually want it to be labeled as well. If you do these kinds of things once or a couple of times in your life as a homeowner, the greatest danger is the car ride there.
