Hello

My uncle is renovating the upper floor of his log house from the early 1900s.
To reinforce the joists, we are planning to install Kerto beams between the old beams and alongside the old ones. Now to the problem: The Kerto beams that will be placed directly next to the old beams cannot use regular joist hangers as one side is against the old beam.

We are considering using brackets cut from sturdy angle iron about 150 mm long and about 100 mm wide and 10 mm thick. These would be bolted in place with sturdy French screws. These Kerto beams would also be screwed into the old beams, which are embedded in the log wall. Since the lower floor is furnished, it is not possible to build anything below the old beams.

Will this type of fastening hold for the beams?

Explanation of the image:
- Yellow, Kerto beam, 51*200
- Red, old beam, approx. 150*150
- Log wall

No answer on whether your solution will hold, but instead of using cut angle irons, you could use internal joist hangers against the existing beam, this way you get a sturdy construction and can nail them together.

Are these available in sizes that fit a 51*200, they should be over 100 mm high.

Sounds good, let's go with that, thanks!
