Hello,

I am in the process of renovating a classic recreation room in our basement. The house was built in 1971, and from what I understand, this was common at that time.

Since the studs on both the floor and walls are wooden and directly against the concrete/wall, there's a basement smell, so I am now at the stage of tearing down the wall paneling (see image) and later the floor. The plan is to install Nivell flooring or equivalent for the floor. The idea is to lay the floor first, then the wall.

However, I'm a bit uncertain about the wall.
The idea is to install metal studs and then leave an air space at the top for ventilation purposes. I am unsure exactly how I should do this. The steel studs will create a "gap" between the wall (which seems to be made of Leca material?) and the wall, so there will be some distance - but should I also leave a "gap" at the top for ventilation?

I am a happy amateur with an emphasis on amateur, so any help and tips are gratefully received! :)

Assuming the smell originates from moisture. You probably need to address the root cause of this... how is the drainage?

Hi!

Forgot to mention the "small" detail. Drainage has NOT been done. Drainage will take place in spring. We currently have some feelers out for the upcoming drainage. :)

Use "insulating drainage" to move the condensation point out as far as possible...
