I'm in the process of renovating our staircase. I was planning to recess 3 spotlights (every other step) into the stringer on one side of the staircase. The question is whether this will affect the durability of the staircase? It will become slightly less, but will it be significant enough to become dangerous?
The stringer is about 25 cm x 5 cm. The holes will be around 4-5 cm. Additionally, I can say that the staircase is of the "open" type with 7 steps. It hangs freely.

The strength of a vertical beam works such that in the middle of the height, the load is zero, then it increases linearly towards the bottom and top. If you make the hole in the middle of the height, you will have the least impact on the structural integrity.

Of course, I meant a beam placed on its edge; if the staircase has a vertical stringer, it's not a staircase but a ladder...?
I'm planning to recess spotlights in my staircase, a straight staircase with walls on both sides. I'm thinking of drilling holes in the middle of the height for the spotlights, and then a smaller hole from above to feed the cable down. Then, run the cable from top to bottom on the top side of the stringer, which I then plan to cover with a specially cut moulding, as wide as the stringer.
