I have an old chimney from the 1950s that hasn't been used for anything other than ventilation since sometime in the 1980s. After talking to the chimney sweep about using the fireplaces, he thought it was okay but mentioned that the chimney needed to be rebuilt above the roof. The chimney has eight flues, and I have counted the number of bricks to be about 280. I've had a couple of masons from the ads in GP come and look at it, and they want about 28,000 kronor for this. Is that a reasonable price? It sounds very expensive to me!

We have received a quote of 9000:- to rebuild a chimney. (Only above the ridge)
The chimney has four flues and the mason will use the old bricks.
He will need to supplement with some "hålsten" on the crown as they adhere better than the existing "whole" bricks.

sounds a bit expensive, my brother and I rebuilt my chimney in 5-6 hours, although only 4 pipes. I think the material cost around 4k, if I remember correctly it was about 150 bricks.

For hole-punched frost-resistant bricks, you should pay a maximum of 10 SEK each, which is just under 3000 SEK in your case. Add approximately 600 kg of type B mortar for 1000 SEK. The total for the material is thus around 4000 SEK. Add perhaps 2000 SEK more for scaffolding and some other things. That leaves 22,000 SEK in the quote. If the bricklayer works for 500 SEK/hour including VAT, he would need 44 hours, which is just over a week's work. Sounds doubtful to me.

I had masons who did the same thing for me. 2 masons over three full days, demolition, rebuilding, and cleaning(!!!). For that, I ended up paying 20kkr... Not fun at all...
