Wondering how important it is for the panel to reach the ceiling. Why can't there be a gap of 10 mm up there instead of down by the floor?

Because you can hide the gap down there with a baseboard. You can obviously do that up top too, but it's not as common to install molding on the ceiling.

I seem to remember cutting some masonite pieces. Then it was just about placing the plasterboard and screwing it. If you use two "stacks," you can also vary the height as needed.

The crossbar in the middle is movable and moves down towards the board when you pull the handle outwards, and then it holds the board up.
