I have a house with a basement from 1946. We have slightly elevated radon levels in the basement and have conducted a radon investigation which showed that a strong radon source is located under the staircase in the basement. I've checked and see no large holes that I can repair. Under the staircase, it's "plain" concrete, and on the floor, I have blue Platon mat + wood parquet.
I'm thinking it would be a good idea to seal the entire surface under the staircase and a certain area under the Platon mat with, for example, a rolled moisture barrier to ensure no air leaks in.
What do you think about the solution with a rolled moisture barrier? Are there other better products? Is it important to lay tiles on a rolled moisture barrier?
I am also considering doing nothing and installing a ventilation pipe to instead extract air. It feels fundamentally wrong not to seal as much as possible..?
What do you say, has anyone had similar problems? We have an annual average value of 320.
