Hey!
I’m thinking of asking a few (un)intelligent questions about an extension we're considering for our house. I can't think of them all right now, so I'll ask them a bit as we go. I'll probably ask some questions on other boards too. Anyway, here’s the first one:
I read in an article about building extensions that you shouldn't attach the main building to the extension. How does this work in practice? The house is a two-story house with a full basement, and for simplicity and safety (and the extra space), we’re thinking of extending the basement too. How do you connect the new basement wall to the existing wall without physically casting them together? And the same with the concrete slab? The roof trusses against the existing wooden frame?

We are planning to extend one gable of the house, but we weren't planning to expand the basement, instead, we want to cast sturdy posts and install the corners on solid pillars. But not join the old and new parts+ How should we solve this? I believe I've read something similar, that the new part should be "floating," but I can't figure this out either...
I've heard that too. However, we will build our extension completely integrated. Existing cottage on a crawl space and pillars. Extension on pillars. Some movement will probably happen. We are building in wood and the pillars are set on rock outcrop. If you build a bathroom at the boundary between the extension and the main building, you might need to be more cautious.petersson79 said:
I will get back to you in a few years with an evaluation
Well, both rooms in the "upstairs" so to speak, will be wet rooms, a bathroom and a utility room. In the basement we're going to build, it will probably just be a large storage room. I mean, if you make a "dilitation joint" between the basement wall in the extension and the existing wall, won't both moisture and soil seep in there then?
I don't want dandelions growing in the basement of my house.. .__.
