We have a small space in the basement that we want to use as a simple home gym. The space is 3 meters wide. A barbell is 2.2 meters wide. The only problem is that there are some water pipes on one side that need to be protected somehow.

If we work out for ten years, sooner or later we'll drop something heavy on the pipes, and whoops, we have a major water leak. I can't imagine a water pipe holding up to a 100kg barbell or a kettlebell flying through the air.

So how would you build to protect the pipes? I will build so that the valves are accessible. The protection needs to be about 1x1 meters. Ytong wall behind the pipes.

  • Basement corner with exposed water pipes, insulated and running along the wall, next to a green mat and gym weights on the floor.
It should just be a matter of building a wooden box with a lid, right? It also doubles as a stand for the kettlebells

Thank you. But how would you build the box to be sturdy enough for a really heavy impact?

15mm plywood + beam + 15mm plywood?

Exactly. If you build the wall and ceiling using that construction and attach it to existing walls, it will hold.
