I have a drain pipe coming from the upstairs that snaps and bangs when running hot water through it. The house was built in '91 and it's probably been like that the whole time, but we haven't noticed it until now when we've moved a bedroom downstairs. Right now I’m renovating the bathroom on the first floor, and have one side somewhat open to the pipes, but can't figure out what’s making the sound. Could it be the pipe itself that is somehow mounted too tightly? I've tried bending and prying a bit without any results. Looks like it's glued at the joint. Prefer not to open more walls since that would mean repairing 2 more rooms. Does anyone have any ideas?

Probably, it's the tensions in the pipe that cause it to move due to the heat. If it's glued at the joint, that might be the cause. If you have the opportunity to insulate the shaft, it could help.

Yes, it seems glued.
I've tried to make sure it's free but no result.
I've also tried to wedge it in place but it still makes noise as hell.
Is there any connection that would allow you to replace a part of the pipe without touching the rest of the installation? I'm thinking of cutting the pipe and then inserting a new piece with a movable joint. Admittedly, I'd have to open one more wall, but it might be worth it since I can reach about 2m of vertical pipe.

yes, there are of course double couplings you can put in where you cut the pipe.
I think it's in some joint where it is not fully glued, causing it to move at the joint when pressure comes from the water when you flush.
