Hello. We are having the bathroom renovated. In connection with this, we have removed the rough-hewn planks from the ceiling. We can see that the beams are damaged by rot. We know there was a water leak in the roof about 15 years ago. New planks were laid in the outer roof then, but the beams seem to have been left. There are three beams. The middle one was very rotted and had white mold infestation (?). We had the carpenter who is working on the bathroom remove a large piece of it, and we will place a new beam alongside the old one for reinforcement. I now see that a second beam is also damaged by rot; I can easily scoop out the outermost centimeters. How much do I need to remove from it? Can I leave it in place? It is dry, and the roof has been intact for a long time. Can it cause any harm while it's there? I have tried looking at previous forum answers but can't make sense of it. Rot-damaged beams and planks with visible mold and water damage in a bathroom ceiling, indicating structural issues related to a past leak.

Decayed ceiling beam with visible wood rot and mold damage in a bathroom undergoing renovation. Evidence of previous water leak issues.

This is what it looked like from the start:
Water-damaged wooden ceiling with visible mold and rot, showing previous water leak. Ceiling boards display dark stains and white fungal growth.

The damaged timber in the first and second pictures doesn't need to be removed, but if the wall behind it doesn't have a load-bearing function, I think you should nail a reinforcement onto the rot-damaged part.
If you still have mold remaining, brush on some Boracol a few times.

Hello. Thanks for the reply. I don't see any mold. We will place a reinforcing beam parallel to the rot-damaged one, attaching it to the healthy wood. Will look into Boracol.
