Maybe a silly question, but in which direction is it recommended to place post shoes when building a fence (1.8m) and a gate?
Left-right certainly looks nicer, but front-back is more durable considering the break effect in wind.
And is there a difference between the fence itself and the gate, assuming you want maximum bearing capacity?
The same question could apply to a carport and roof for a patio as well, although I'm mostly interested in fence+gate at the moment.

My tip for fencing or gates based on hard-earned experience
is to skip post shoes entirely and drive the entire post into the hole and cast it directly in the concrete. Post shoes, if we're talking about the model with a central point underneath with a U bracket above, are too soft if they only have support in one direction. They can handle the load from above well but not as well sideways. However, they work better when you are building with four corners and bracing in between... like a carport.
Can only agree with the previous speaker. The neighbor has just torn down their hedge and replaced it with a very nice fence. However, it is cast with post shoes with only a round iron down in the cement. When you grab the railing one meter up, it sways a lot. Feels very insecure. (Even if it will hold, it feels very wobbly.)
I would argue that it is still too weak if you are building a solid fence. Especially if you have a longer straight section.mexitegel said:

I agree with Peter, cast the posts in concrete.
Plintjärn every day of the week over post shoes and let them preferably go up at least 15-20 cm on the posts. I have not seen/used a model that can support a plank... Possibly a fence.. However, I don't think you should cast the posts in and if so, make a substantial hollow around each post//
