I'm going to build a gate with a frame construction. In the frame itself, I will have vertically going 45*45 battens, with a transverse 95*45 in the middle.
I was thinking of doweling the vertical ones at the bottom and top. The only pre-made dowels I can find are in birch. Can they be used for an outdoor environment? Or do I need to buy a dowel cutter and make my own?

Aha. Then it'll be birch (even though square plugs in larch or oak would have been really really cool.
