This will be my first post here so I hope it ends up in the right place.

My partner and I have just bought a townhouse where there's an open fireplace in the middle of the room. This will be removed when we take over the house. But my question is: What is the best way to seal the chimney pipe? There isn't a chimney stack going up, just a pipe through the roof.
My thought was to seal the pipe on the inside and patch the hole with plaster. Then on the outside, leave the pipe as is. Just weld on a cover so it doesn't rain in.

Am I completely off base here?
Tips and ideas are welcome.

Why not also dismantle the chimney stack when the fireplace is removed?

As mentioned, it seemed easiest to just leave it.
If you take it down, do you have to redo the roof, etc.?

If you cover the hole on the top with a weld so no water comes in, then it's just a matter of pushing up insulation of some kind and then plastering?
That's how I would do it and fix the pipe from the top IF I ever replace the roof.

Just as I thought, Jan,
The roof was replaced in 2008, so it won't be redone for a long time.
But then I'm not completely wrong in my thinking.
