Now that I've started putting up things in the new house, I'm wondering where to use wall anchors and where it's unnecessary.

Example 1: In the basement, we have a ceiling made of some type of chipboard, maybe tretex. It's about 1.5-2 cm thick. Here, I've attached both lights and curtain rails, and so far, I've used long 6 mm screws straight in after pre-drilling with a small hole. This seems to hold well enough. Would it have been better to use wall anchors? In what way is it better than the screw drilling into the material?

Example 2: Screwing into aerated concrete in the basement, it seems pretty clear that you need wall anchors since the screw itself will never be able to drill directly into the material. You use an anchor that expands and holds the screw with pressure but also because the screw has drilled into the anchor.

Example 3: Screwing into single or double gypsum. I've realized that screwing directly into gypsum is practically pointless. Even if the screw drills into the material, the strength isn't enough to hold. So it always seems that an anchor is necessary. If what you're hanging is lightweight, nails work but must be light, like a small clock.

Another question is what differentiates the various anchors? I have a box with quite a few wood anchors, and I question whether they really provide better durability than if the screw drilled directly into the wood. It seems there are also many different anchors for concrete, so what happens if you use a wood anchor for concrete?

Exactly, it's a bit hard to understand what you mean by "träplugg". Plastic plugs are not normally used for wood, but for stone materials. If you're screwing into wood, insert the plug directly into the wood after pre-drilling with a drill bit that's a bit narrower than the screw is thick.

And as mentioned, use träplugg to join pieces of wood together instead of screwing into the wall :p

Regarding tretex, it's hard to advise if we don't know what's behind it. Brick? Use plastic plugs. Rough-sawn, wood? Pre-drill a bit as mentioned above and in both cases use a sufficiently long screw, tretex doesn't bear much directly :-)

Alright, then I know I don't need anchors for wood :)


In this case, it is likely that tretex is on some type of masonite.

In some cases, I've been able to put in studs, but most often they are just placed in these boards. Above the boards, there is insulation.

Then it's probably something else as well, because I have 2 Kartell lamps hanging on one board and a lamp track with 5 lamps on another board. Additionally, I now have two 2-meter curtain tracks with about 1-2 kg curtains on each that are attached over several boards.

All of them seem to be holding well.

But sure, if you're going for a lamp that weighs up to 5 KG, you'll likely need to find a better solution.

No, I know that 2 lamps and a rail with at least 3 brackets aren't attached to any stud. The same goes for one of the curtain rails. However, I managed to get the other curtain rail into several studs, and there was a noticeable difference when tightening the screws. It was quite tough all the way through, while the others were only tough at the beginning.

Strange, usually it's possible to remove screws with hand power.
 
It could be that you have råspont behind the tretex, if you drill lightly you should feel it quickly sink in and then get harder. If it's still wood, it's likely a stud or råspont on the studs.
I think you can glimpse a stud where you're prying with the crowbar.
