We have a former storage room with an exterior door that we have now closed off to make the room a bedroom. The room only has painted chipboard and now we want to put up wallpaper instead. The house is from '93 and you can clearly see how it has cracked between the boards. I considered putting up drywall on this, but since two of the walls are outer walls, I'm wondering how much it will damage the vapor barrier. As you can see in the pictures, the studs (that I've found at least) aren't very close together. In the pictures, the correct marking is between boards (also stud there) while blue indicates there is an additional stud.

What are the alternatives, gluing up drywall? Or is it possible to fill in/reinforce the joints in some way to prevent it from cracking again?

If there's plywood underneath, just write like crazy if you're afraid of cracks in the plaster.

So you can screw directly into the chipboard?

What about the plastic behind it, since they are exterior walls?
 
No worries about the plastic, just screw it on.
 
Make sure to have the right length for the screws.

Nice, the chipboard seems to be about 13mm and then I thought of using regular plasterboard so another 13mm. Should the screw not even go through the chipboard or does it matter if it sticks out a bit behind?
 
The plastic will seal tightly around the screw.

Do you mean if I use a 25mm screw it won't puncture the plastic, or how do you mean that the plastic seals around the screw?

Sorry for all the silly questions. I'm new but I would like to try a bit myself now that I have some more free time.
 
A house from '93 is hardly so well sealed with plastic that it matters if any screws go through the plastic............

As long as the screw remains in the hole, it is sufficiently tight. Virtually all houses built in the last 40 years have the vapor barrier directly behind the surface layer with a lot of screw holes. It's only in the most recent years, with the advent of true low-energy houses and precise tightness measurements, that it has become a 'problem'.

I am more concerned about the fact that you can't find more studs than that? Is the house still standing?
