I want to smooth out an open fireplace fairly evenly. Right now it looks like in the picture below. How should I proceed? Should I try to knock down the bricks as evenly as possible (with the risk of the stones cracking?) and then plaster? Should I just fill the gaps with a ton of mortar? Is reinforcement needed? Hilfe 😅🥲

  • A brick fireplace with a large blue panel above and a tiled hearth on the floor, showing some soot marks inside the opening.
  • A red brick fireplace with visible gaps and uneven edges, showing a partially built structure in need of plastering for a smooth finish.
Polish until it becomes smooth is what you're supposed to do. Shouldn't be a problem.

But why? Change appearance? Is it going to be painted afterward? White? Wouldn't it work to paint directly without polishing then? And keep the somewhat unique texture, but make it a little more discreet. Lots of guesses. hm hm Serious suggestions, of course, I mean😁

What, don't you think it's discreet? 😅😉
Yes, to change appearance. I find it hard to see the beauty in it as it stands now. Just painting might have worked, but I still think I'd want it smooth 😅 I might also be super eager to try smoothing. But do you think it's possible to just go for it, without reinforcement or anything?

I guess the idea with the shape is that it's supposed to work like the fins on a heat sink?

Consider if it might look nice to build on another surface? Like gray slate. Really stylish. Or American Cabin style with light round nice stones.

Pre-water a bit, and apply 3 mm c mortar in stages.
Cover floors etc first.
It will be Very messy.

Thanks! I'll just have to try, what's the worst that could happen, I think 😅

That you cover the floor poorly, that the tape is not sealed, and water leaks onto the floor.
You need to pre-water and plaster, and it will get very messy around.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll cover it like crazy. The floor is going to be replaced all the way down to the concrete, but it's probably nice to cover it anyway 😊
