Plasterboard directly on existing plank wall?

Our bedroom has both plank/panel walls and a plank/panel ceiling (sloping ceiling), and we think it's a bit too much. So we would like to drywall the walls but keep the ceiling as it is. Can you easily put drywall directly on the plank/panel wall, or should you remove the planks/panel first to place the drywall directly on the studs?

You can't paint the panel then? Or maybe it's the texture that's bothering you...

If the surface is even, you can screw the plasterboard directly onto it. The crucial thing is that there must not be any tension in the board so that it breaks apart.

Thank you for the response.
It's probably more the structure that bothers us, as you mentioned. It becomes very striped from the grooves/profiles in the planks.
