Hi, beginner question again.. I am going to install drywall in my garage ceiling, currently there is 22mm tongue-and-groove paneling (is that what it's called?) that is nailed to the rafters, can I screw the drywall directly onto them or do I need to use something stronger over these?

Thanks in advance!

You say 22, normally in the ceiling it's only 12.5 mm panel. Now it's thick. If you screw tightly, it will be fine. Normally, gypsum is set on studs 60 C/C on walls and in the ceiling 30 C/C. It will be a lot of screws going up through, so be careful not to hurt yourself if you crawl on top. The screw should go through to grip well.

okay thanks! yeah right it might be a bit silly with the screws sticking up. but I was just thinking of placing wind barrier under the insulation against the roof panel and not a vapor barrier, so maybe it doesn't matter so much if there are holes in the wind protection paper. It might not really be needed anyway actually.

That there are small holes in the wind barrier doesn't matter, it was your knees I was thinking about.

Oh right, I understand it :-) but now the roofing is laid and the insulation is finished up top, so I need to build a walkway in the attic in case I need to be there, thanks for the help! :-)

Use 30-35mm screws. There's no reason for the screw to go through. Doesn't grip well in air.

What 12.5 mm panel is common in garage ceilings? Please link. TS, you probably have råspont in the ceiling. So just screw the gypsum directly onto this.

Haven't said boo or baa about the roofing material, normally with 12.5mm panels in the ceiling, but the OP says he has 22 there, and my response was to screw directly into the ceiling, and he accepted that. So, there shouldn't be any problems or anything else for the gypsum there as far as I understand.
