Hello.
I am in the process of tearing out an old kitchen to install a new IKEA kitchen instead. Currently, one of the interior walls is tiled, and the plan is to take down the old tiles, tidy up the wall a bit, and then paint it. Since the stove is being moved, there is no longer a need to have tiles on the interior wall. This evening, when I started to knock down the tiles, I discovered that the wall has just over 5mm of plaster over a layer of chicken wire. Naturally, the plaster crumbles just by looking at it. Once I remove the tiles, I will need to plaster an area about 1.5x0.5 meters in size. The rest of the wall is also quite shabby with many old plug holes and unevenness.
So, I'm wondering what type of plaster do I need? How long does it take to dry? There is some time pressure as the kitchen needs to be set up by Sunday. Could it be an option to put up 6mm gypsum board on the entire interior wall instead? It's about one sheet of gypsum board on each side of the door and a bit above the door, so it's not much. An advantage of that would be that I could then route some conduits for supplying the oven and fridge/freezer in the wall instead of having to nail cables along the skirting boards and around the door frame.
