I've posted a thread in the building conservation department without getting a response, but now I've discovered that this is probably the right place to post my question.
I'm about to re-mortar and re-plaster the chimney (inside the house). I'm just wondering if it's safe to go ahead and knock off plaster and mortar (2 cm between the stones as I've read one should do) around the whole piece at once, or if I should do one side at a time. This is on the upper floor, so about 3m of the chimney needs to be mortared and plastered. The chimney is in such poor condition that there are not many places where I don't need to scrape clean. What type of mortar should I use and is it possible to do one side at a time, considering that the mortar shouldn't set "together" without possibly forming seams.
Grateful for a quick response and/or a link where I can read up on the subject.
