Will be plastering 12 sqm of old basement wall, exterior walls. There's old loose plaster that I need to remove somehow and then apply something suitable. I've plastered many times before in different contexts with and without reinforcement. The interior walls in the basement are rock solid and good, made in the early '80s or maybe even earlier and completely without reinforcement.

I'd like to plaster just once, and it's difficult to combine guide rails with reinforcement, so what's the standard today? I've also used metal mesh on rolls before, which is such a hassle to attach...

Applying some kind of fiber mesh while plastering sounds appealing, but then you can't set guide rails at the same time, so it will have to be done in two rounds...

How was it done from the beginning? Probably without wire mesh. And why has it cracked? Maybe settlement or frost damage. In that case, you have the answer there.

Redo it as it was done from the beginning, just a bit more carefully.
