Hello! We have exposed our chimney and are going to install a stove (Contura 510). We need to repair the chimney a bit because the plaster has come off in the corner. Just a question...how do you apply a slurry to a chimney or how should one do it to make it look nice? I have no experience with this kind of thing, so all help with suggestions is welcome.
Have a great weekend!

Hello!
I would probably not plaster it, but instead render it. In my opinion, plastering doesn't give a very nice surface. Rendering is preferable, and then it's just a matter of painting the entire chimney breast so it looks like new :) Rendering on your own is relatively difficult if you want a nice surface, so I would probably spend a bit on a bricklayer!

Best regards, Johan

my experience (with two brick chimneys) is that if only the surface layer is damaged on the outside of the indoor chimney, plastering looks the best. If there are damages in the mortar that holds the bricks together, this must first be repaired. Plastering is usually done on the inside to stabilize the smoke channel. The choice of mortar for plastering the inside of the smoke channel depends on what the channel is used for. I had a company fix both chimneys last spring, and that was the method they chose.

Considering previous responses, I have to be a bit of a counterpoint :) Just slap it on, and then paint. That way, you'll get a surface that follows the brick, and smaller blemishes disappear with the slamming. I think it gives a pleasant feel of both the plaster and the brick.

Knock off all the old plaster, make sure everything loose is removed. Mix the mortar to a slightly looser porridge. With the help of a brush (whatever they're called in masonry terms?) you can apply it to the wall. There will be a lot of splatter, so protect everything nearby properly (the floor). When you remove the plaster, it dusts significantly.

Finally, I must admit it is a bit of hard work. So if you're just repairing a small corner, perhaps a plastered wall is preferable :)

Good luck.
