I have knocked off all the plaster on the chimney as it was loose. Now I want to rough plaster the chimney before applying slate. What should I use? The reason I want to plaster the wall before setting the slate is that it is very uneven, +/- several cm. At Bauhaus, they suggested gypsum plaster, but it feels like gypsum-based plaster might have a thermal insulating effect, and I want the slate surface to act as a heat element in the room. So - what should I use? Anyone know?

Have never heard that gipsputs would have an insulating effect. The advantage is that it is very easy to work with, can be applied in thick layers, and dries quickly. I would undoubtedly go for gipsputs.

One can also use the universal putty Maxit 4040 (220kr at Beijer). It is also easy to work with, dries quickly, can be applied thickly, and feels sturdier than gypsum plaster. I myself sprayed the chimney with primer to be on the safe side. Just don't mix too large a batch at once.

Ok, thanks for the response. I will go with gipsputs - it seems to be what most people recommend.

Hmm at my place, the chimney sweeper said that I wasn't allowed to cover the chimney stack with either boards or anything else because you need to be able to see if any cracking occurs.

I've also chipped away some loose lime mortar that I will smooth out with masonry and plaster C before painting.

I would have used c-mortar, mostly because I know that the elasticity is ok for the purpose, and it serves as a suitable base for all kinds of tiles. I don't know anything about the elasticity in gypsum mortar...

And speaking of Alpha's post: check with your chimney sweep what they think. They have a tendency to vary requirements and regulations completely unsystematically between each other :)
