Patio, Glue-laminated timber: Beam on post, notch or not?
Hello.
For my planned conservatory, with a design program I've determined I need:
Front beam 90x225 or 115x225.
Posts for the beam 115x115.
(I have a span of 4700mm where I don't want a post in the middle, and will have a standard corrugated plastic roof)
If I choose the thicker beam of 115x225, I can't make notches in the posts, so how do I achieve sufficient stability for the beam if it is placed over the posts, or is it maybe not okay to do so?
And if someone has the patience, you're welcome to briefly explain the concept of glulam deflection to me as a complete beginner. In the calculation program I get, for instance, the value 21mm (L235) with LT 90x225 at a 5000mm span with a corrugated plastic roof and snow zone 1. I can't imagine a 90x225 deflecting 21mm under that load, so the value probably means something else that I couldn't manage to Google.
Regards,
Mikael Karlsson

The front beam can be mounted with angle brackets only, it should then be stabilized by the rest of the construction. You can, for example, look at Skånska Byggvaror's assembly instructions which answer many questions:
