We got a new exit on the house made during the fall, 140 cm double door from the kitchen, and as soon as spring comes, a staircase must be built. The idea is a staircase where you can sit and drink your morning coffee, with nice morning sun there. So it should be fairly shallow but still kept as short as possible, otherwise it will block the passage around the house.
I have some choices to make, and I would appreciate any tips:
* Wood or built with lecablocks? Built and plastered would match the house and the cast staircase of the main entrance that is right next to it. But wood is simple, cheap, and the house probably has never been re-drained (1956). No moisture problems today, but we might have to tear up the yard in 10 years...
* If we go with lecablocks, I thought to build the sides + a support section in the middle and then lay steps on - what?
* 28 cm step depth, 17.5 step height, height 105, 6 steps, I think will be a "sit and have a coffee" staircase that is still efficient to walk on and not deeper than necessary. Right?
* Landing at the top - how little can one get by with? Two step depths - about 60 cm?
* Today there's grass and muddy soil right up to the house, probably fairly shallow since the rock knobs protrude everywhere on the lot, but still, I probably need to prepare footings for joist hangers if we go with wood, or some heavier groundwork if we're building with lecablocks? Dig out a few decimeters and fill with gravel, crushed stone, something else?
