Panel against chimney?

I'm going to panel an entire wall, and the last part of that wall is a chimney flue. The rest of the wall is boarded, so I hadn't planned to use battens. I'm pretty sure it's not OK to place paneling directly against the chimney flue, but if I first put drywall on the wall including the chimney flue, is it OK then?

The only thing I can advise you to do is to talk to the kommunens sotarmästare.

A layer of wallpaper was the only thing I was allowed to put on the chimney according to the chimney sweep. Besides painting, that is ....
