Open up 4.2m in load-bearing wall in a 1 1/2 storey house
Hello !!
A couple of weeks ago I was here asking about the dimensions for a glue-laminated beam. I received a good response from member justusandersson and now I would like to have something checked.
The previous condition was that the opening was under 4 m, and then I got a suggestion for a suitable beam for an opening of 3.8 m = 165x315 and an opening of 3.3 m = 115x315. Now the conditions have changed. The opening should be 4.2 m, and I have received a response suggesting that the glue-laminated beam should be 415 in height, which is awkward since you would practically have to duck indoors. As an alternative to the glue-laminated beam, I've been told that an IPE 240 beam can solve the problem. I would appreciate if I can get this confirmed. Preferably by justusandersson

It is very flattering to be requested in this way! If the load conditions are unchanged and only the span has increased, I suggest 215x315 as the beam dimension for glulam. IPE 240 also works but is a more expensive option that doesn't save much on height. If you want steel, HEA 200 is lower.
Thank you for confirming what I received from another party. I would have preferred glulam for several reasons, but 215 is too wide considering the connection to the existing wall. Cladding a steel beam is not something I appreciate, but it will probably have to be IPE 240 anyway. Thanks again for your involvement.

If width is the problem, 140x360 is an option.
