Old floor leveling compound? forgot to check the dates...
Hey there.
I came across a batch of self-leveling floor compound and was all happy, so I mixed it and started pouring.
Now, 3 hours later, I see on the packaging that the date has somewhat passed...
The thing is, I've mixed 8 bags and it's not setting well.
As I said, it's been 3 hours, and it's still very watery...
Does anyone have any idea what will happen?
Will it set? Deluxe anxiety right now...
The brand is maxit Floor 4160
A type of "fast-leveling" compound that's supposed to be ready for flooring after 1 day.
Ideas?

How much for old? I have used Maxit Fibre Floor Rapid 4320 that was a little over half a year old. The only thing I have managed to find out is that the chromium content cannot be guaranteed after the date. Didn't notice any other difference.
I believe they are usually marked with the manufacturing date, and then during storage it says that the material lasts six months after the manufacturing date if stored in a dry place. The "problem" is that it may have been sitting on the shelf in the hardware store for almost half a year when you buy it.
The chromium content does not affect strength, but if I have understood it correctly, it is more because chromium is not very beneficial. If the chromium content cannot be guaranteed, clothes and filters for the mouth and nose are more critical when mixing.

aha...
then maybe it has to do with it being cold in the bathroom where they are. I've now hung in a 2KW heater and it seems like they are drying faster... but it has been many hours since they were placed and it still feels very "wet". Can't walk on it yet anyway :/

Humidity and temperature can cause issues. I leveled the summer cabin's bathroom floor on the hottest day of the year (it certainly felt that way) and the humidity made it take a lot longer to cure. If it's chilly and damp, I imagine it won't be walkable after three hours.
The strength is also not guaranteed. It doesn't depend solely on chrome reduction. Cement is a perishable commodity. If you're lucky, you'll manage. If not, in some cases, it won't harden at all. The risk that you won't achieve the intended strength is high.

Since it's already on the floor, there's not much more to do than wait out the misery. Have an evening whiskey

the floor area is probably around 5-10 degrees. but set up a fan now so it's around 25 degrees in the air in there now.. but as I said, we'll see tomorrow when I come back from work... but wow does it feel wrong when you lay out rapid-setting and after 6h see that it doesn't even go to walk on
I don't know exactly how it is with levelling compound, but in most "cement-bound" products, the best-before date is for the added chrome reduction agent. That is, the cement works well even after the date's expiration but may then cause chrome eczema and the like.
I think you should call Maxit tomorrow and check with them before you start to chisel. There seem to be differing opinions on the durability, Jon_h says in another thread that it probably doesn't matter much in such a short time. My floor is completely fine.
It seems like it's starting to burn now. I'd be so happy if it's feasible tomorrow. I've emailed the Maxit product manager about the whole thing. We'll see what they say about it. Thanks for your help and quick responses so far. I'll update with more tomorrow.
