I have to tear down the wall under an old window where we've previously had a leak. The stud that goes from ceiling to floor, which I will screw the new window into, has rotted a bit at one spot, not completely but maybe a fifth of the wood (thickness) is affected over just under a decimeter. It's dry and all, but I thought I'd try to replace the whole stud, especially since the new window weighs quite a bit.

Now to the question. The stud is 37x80, so I'm wondering how I should do this so I don't have to open up the whole wall and replace studs or build on. Can you put two 45x45 together, so to speak, then you'd have trimmed a bit from the 95 that is otherwise closest. Or should you buy something wider and cut it with a circular saw?

Grateful for all your ideas and tips that you want to share.

Take a 45x95 and split it with the circular saw, it feels like the most convenient solution.

If 1/5 of the rule on 1dm is rotten, you do not need to replace the entire rule. Cut away the rotten part and reinforce the rule with a loose piece on one side.
