Hi! We have bought a winter-insulated holiday home from the early 80s. When we tore up the floor in the bathroom, we discovered that there is no sill. The floor joists rest directly on the foundation wall, lecablock. However, there is a sill paper between the wall and joists. Does anyone know if this is a problem and how we can address it if so? Grateful for advice.

  • Floor joists resting directly on a concrete block foundation with asphalt paper in a bathroom of an 80s winterized cottage.
  • Exposed bathroom floor showing floor joists resting directly on cinder block foundation with sill paper in between, illustrating a possible construction issue.

No, it doesn't have any important function under the floor joists, so you don't need to do anything.

That's how our small house from -79 is also built.
It got exciting when parts needed to be replaced, and we had to install a mechanically ventilated underfloor (have an uninsulated slab).

Oh no, what did you have to do then?

Saw off sections with a multi-tool and reciprocating saw. Insert blocks. Then fold in a sill. Removed the support blocks one by one. Went okay, but took a lot of time.

Looks really good, no rot damage, just to build again. Great that there was sill paper so nothing was resting on the concrete blocks, dry and poison-free it looks.
