I am renovating at a friend's house, and when we scraped off the wallpaper, we noticed there was tiding paper (newspapers) behind the wallpaper. Of course, I got a bit curious and searched the internet without successful results. Maybe someone here knows something about this (old?) method? A quick response would be appreciated.

Well, maybe not wallpaper but...

When I renovated my previous house, I found newspapers from 1915 under the insulation (sawdust) in the floor of the oldest part of the house.
Newspapers from 1935 under the insulation in an extension.
The newspaper was what they used at the bottom to prevent the sawdust from falling out.

Quite interesting to read about submarine warfare and other misfortunes.

Okay.. but the strange thing is that there were newspapers behind the wallpaper on a concrete wall. and it can't have much to do with insulation, right?

To achieve a smoother surface, perhaps? :)

It was not entirely uncommon to put newspaper on the walls in the past. It was to even out the surface. There wasn't filler of today's standard 100 years ago...

Okay. It was that simple! Thanks then..

I forgot to mention that in my house, at some point around 1950, they placed newspapers and magazines under a linoleum floor to even it out. Really fun to see how Veckorevyn etc. looked at that time. I also found a couple of newspapers from 1907 that were used as insulation (the house was built in 1907).
