I have, or rather had, a staircase that wasn't particularly fun.
It is now torn down, and what's left is a hole with a ladder in it.
A new staircase is on the way.
The hole is 2850mm x 940mm and floor to floor is 2290mm (yes, we have a small house).
The old staircase turned around 180 degrees. It started with a 90-degree turn to the left, then straight, and then another 90-degree turn to the left.
The new staircase will go the other way and start straight, then turn 90 degrees to the right.
The old staircase had 16 steps with a step height of about 145mm; the new staircase will probably manage with 13 steps and a step height of 176mm.
But I can't figure out how to calculate in the turn. How many steps are needed there. Of course, I would like to extend the hole, but it's not possible because of a load-bearing beam. But the old staircase fit, so it shouldn't be worse.
Does anyone have advice on how many steps are needed in the turn and how I should calculate it?

Perhaps not so easy to explain with text, but I'll give it a try.
I always draw the staircase in full scale on some boards.
You shouldn't calculate the turn separately, but rather the entire length of the walking line divided by the number of steps forward (in your case 12), so all the steps in the staircase feel equally long, even in the turn.
The walking line should be 300mm from the outer edge of the staircase
2 step heights + 1 step length should be around 600 mm

Do as larsb describes it if you want to succeed in getting it right. Not easy.
An alternative is to send your measurements and how you want it to look (railings, balusters, etc.) to a stair company. It doesn't cost much to get a drawing of the steps and stringers. Then you can print it in full scale and trace it. Drawing might cost about 1000-2000 kr.
