As the question states, we currently have simple gypsum walls indoors. Do they hold if one wants to buy natural stone wall tiles, which are much heavier? Anything to consider?

Doubtful.

A bit more info. The natural stone we have looked at weighs about 48 kg/sqm. I have tried googling but can't find anywhere how much a drywall can handle. Most of the information is based on using mounting brackets, etc. to hang a heavy TV, but it's not quite the same thing. Tried asking at Bauhaus and Hornbach but they don't have any sensible answer. They simply don't know if it will hold.

If it matters, the studs in the wall seem to be about 50 cm apart.

50cm? c/c 60 is usually standard. Anyway, 48 kg per m2 is too heavy, even with plaster anchors, unless you can screw everything into the studs. What you can do, though, is screw an OSB or plywood board into the studs, and then attach the brick to it.

Thanks for the reply. It's probably 60 cm in between and they've measured from edge to edge instead of from middle to middle on the studs. Yes, we might have to ignore this unless we first add a new layer of drywall on top.
