Sometimes you see constructions where beams are "enclosed" by two boards fastened from the side, see image below. I've been thinking a bit about this and wonder what the purpose is of this, rather than having studs/posts that the beams rest on (which, with my amateurish understanding, should be more stable, but maybe that's not the case)? Is it material-saving, easier to build, or when is this type of construction used? Also, does anyone know if it has a name?
