Nail z-panel - where should the nails be placed?

Lifting this a bit as you seem to know...
I've been thinking a bit about nail length for the battens and paneling. Do you have any good thoughts/suggestions?

Wisely from experience, I know that the panel wood shrinks. We painted the horizontal paneling on the main house with black Falu paint. After a couple of years, the paneling had shrunk about 10-12 mm. Luckily, I had fastened the paneling with stainless screws, so it was just a matter of unscrewing, pushing together, and screwing it back again. I would have preferred to nail the paneling a thousand times over, but I prefer the tightest paneling possible.
