Mortar for steel beam support on brick wall.
Good evening!
This weekend I will be preparing a support for an HEB180 on an old chimney breast which will replace an old inserted beam.
I will need to cut off/into some of the bricks and then want to build a flat surface to lay the steel beam on.
Anyone have any tips here before I have to learn something the hard way?

What you need to do is check that the support on which you will build the wall can withstand the load that the beam will generate. To find that out, you need to determine the beam's total load and its own weight. An HEB 180 weighs 51.2 kg/m.
Hello and thank you for your reply,
I have consulted a designer who has gone through this and provided instructions for the minimum dimensions of the foundation, so I feel I have taken the best measures possible regarding that, I'm more thinking about how to make the actual foundation as good as possible...

In that case, there should be no problem. If you've never done bricklaying before, I recommend some practice masonry elsewhere.
