Great thread! Thanks for the nice pictures. I'm approaching construction, have read quite a lot on Fornobravo now.

Does anyone have tips on where to find fire bricks for less than 35kr/brick? After all, it will be about 200 bricks.
I've combed through blocket with no success.

I'm hesitant about trying other alternatives than fire bricks in the dome, like chimney bricks. It would be quite a shame if it didn't turn out well, but feel free to convince me otherwise.

@johanras, considering borrowing your mortar recipe - where did you get the materials?

Bought lime, sand, and cement from Beijer, the fireclay from a stove builder. Used barely 20kg of lime, clay, and cement each. The stones I bought were real firebricks made in Höganäs, through a retailer. Whole brick standard size about 220x110x65mm cost around 50kr if I remember correctly. It becomes expensive and went upward of 10k just for the stones, but I think it's worth it to avoid potential problems, especially when you spend so much time on the work. It gets really hot in the stove, keep that in mind. Maybe regular bricks would suffice, but I didn't feel like taking the risk, and from what I see on FB, everyone uses firebricks. What dimensions are you considering?

Looks good, even though I'm not used to the redder color in the picture. I bought from tegelbolaget in Östersund, the shipping wasn't expensive. Call and check with them what they charge. Sorry, I meant the dimensions of the oven.

Thank you for taking the time to post the description and the nice pictures. I am working on a similar project myself and have come to the conclusion that I need to mix my own mortar. So far, I have bought 4x4.5kg fireproof mortar from Byggmax but I think I need at least 30kg more.

I am working on a build like this:
But what are your experiences with vermiculite concrete? How long is the drying time needed? (I think it seems like the vermiculite absorbs a lot of water. The surface is dry after 1/2 days, but judging by the weight of the build, there is a lot of water left...)

A vermiculite concrete structure on a wooden workbench with a blue exercise ball mold and an orange pipe on top. Concrete oven dome being constructed with vermiculite concrete mix on a wooden base, ruler for scale.
