The 'attic renovation' project is set to begin this fall, but I'm getting different advice from various contractors on what to start with.
The project involves a cold attic, and the ceiling is currently just raw wood. The floor joist is covered with plastic and insulation.

1) Where do you start? You must have the floor to be able to insulate the sloped ceiling, right? Or should you insulate the sloped ceiling first and then lay the floor?

2) After the air gap and insulation, should it be covered with plastic? Does the plastic in the sloped ceiling need to overlap the plastic under the insulation in the floor joist?

3) I've heard you can replace the sewer vent (or whatever it's called) with a vent and place it in the floor joist. What are these called and what do they look like? Won't it be airtight to have it under the floor? Smell?

4) The eternal question about ventilation, should I make a hole in the gable for this or not?

There will probably be a couple more questions as the project progresses...

*bump* No one?

Sitting in pretty much the same situation. Did it ever work out for you? Do you have any insights to share?
