At our basement door, I have removed the door trims in connection with repainting. What you can see is that previously, wood was built directly against concrete (house built in '35). This seems to work except at the door trim and threshold of the basement door. There, moisture has seeped in and soaked the wood, which has become rotten. The material is essentially like soil, and you can see traces of pests.
How should I proceed before putting back new trims? I'm not interested in replacing the threshold or doing any major work right now; I just don't want to worsen the problem. Is it enough to lay some asphalt paper directly under the trim, with an upward fold against the wall inside, or will it still absorb water capillarily? Should I try to fit the trim as tightly against the stairs as possible or should I leave a little gap and risk water splashing in when it rains?
