Water damage, fungus attack?
What do you suspect it might be?

I suspect it is water damage. Whether it is old and repaired or ongoing can be seen when you climb up into the attic above. (But I guess it's cut-out real estate photos? If you had visited the house, you would probably already have been climbing up in the attic .)

Exactly right. I'll go up to the attic this weekend and check it out. Hopefully, it's an old damage that's been repaired.
